Sylvain Frémaux, founding director
Born in Paris and raised in Monaco and the Loire Valley, Sylvain has taught the language and culture of his native France to people of all ages since 1978, serving as an instructor for such institutions as University of Southern California and Yale University. In Oregon, Sylvain has taught at Linfield College, Lewis and Clark College, Pacific University, and Western Oregon University, where he has designed and taught a variety of interdisciplinary courses in both French and English. He is also a frequent guest instructor for the community college system and is currently on the faculty of Alliance française of Portland. He holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Southern California and a master’s degree from Yale University. His education also includes a four-year cycle in public law from Faculté Autonome et Co-gérée d’Économie et de Droit in Paris.
As the founding director of FranceTours, Sylvain has led annual tours and travel courses throughout his native France since 1997. His thematic tours have included such topics as: Retracing the Steps of Joan of Arc; Touraine, Garden of France; World Youth Days 1995 in Paris (on the occasion of Pope John Paul II’s visit); Explore the Valley of the French Kings; Séjour en Val de Loire; and Paris, City of Lights. His upcoming tour, Ancient Islands and Ports of Brittany, will be featured in 2010. As an international scholar and translator, his bilingual translations and publications include, among others: Alexandre Tansman: Diary of a Twentieth Century Composer (winner of the 1998 Wilk Prize from USC), The Life of Father Croquet, Missionary in Oregon (Confederate Tribes of Grande Ronde), and the translation from the French of Jean Mongrédien’s French Music from the Enlightenment to Romanticism, 1789-1830 (Amadeus Press). In the field of arts, culture, and commerce, he has provided translations for many institutions, such as the Portland Art Museum, the International Conference on Forestry in Corvallis, and ARI Technologies.
